As independent Microsoft licensing specialists and seasoned contract negotiators, BeSharp Experts is dedicated to keeping our clients informed about crucial updates that impact their IT investments. Today, we delve into Microsoft’s recent announcement regarding the end of Premier Support sales and its implications for both commercial and public sector customers.
Commercial customers
Effective July 1, 2021, Microsoft ceased offering Premier Support agreements to new commercial customers and those transitioning to Microsoft Unified. This marked a significant shift for organizations relying on these comprehensive support services. Furthermore, as of July 1, 2022, renewing commercial customers were also ineligible for Premier Support agreements.
Public sector customers
For public sector entities, including National, Federal, State and Local Government (SLG), State-owned Enterprises (SOE), and Education (EDU), the timeline is staggered:
- July 1, 2021: Premier Support agreements were discontinued for public sector customers transitioning to Unified.
- July 1, 2023: New public sector customers were no longer eligible for Premier Support agreements.
- July 1, 2024: Renewing public sector customers were also excluded from renewing Premier Support agreements.
According to Microsoft, this phased approach is aimed at aligning with Microsoft’s strategic direction while accommodating the unique needs of organizations in the public sector.
Out of scope: Premier Support for Partners (PSfP)
Despite these changes, the Premier Support for Partners (PSfP) offer remains available in the market. However, there are specific retirement timelines under the PSfP Thru Direct model:
- October 1, 2023: Indonesia, Israel, Korea, Kuwait, Portugal, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, Turkey, United Arab Emirates.
- January 1, 2024: Bahrain, China, Egypt, France, Hong Kong, India, Poland, Romania, Macau, Malaysia, Morocco, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam.
- April 15, 2024: Czechia (commercial customers only).
- July 1, 2024: All remaining markets worldwide will cease new sales of PSfP Thru Direct.
Existing PSfP Thru Direct agreements will be honored for the duration specified in the agreements, ensuring continuity for current customers until the end of their service term.
Transitioning forward
To continue receiving Microsoft support services, organizations can explore two primary options:
- Unified Enterprise Agreement: Obtain a Unified Enterprise agreement through an approved Partner Broker to maintain comprehensive support coverage.
- PSfP Thru with Separate Schedules: Opt for PSfP Thru with separate schedules tailored to individual end customers, ensuring targeted support aligned with specific business requirements.
At BeSharp Experts, we are committed to assisting organizations in navigating these transitions effectively.
