On October 1, 2025, Microsoft changed the name of its Microsoft 365 E5 mini-suites. This change helps organizations clearly see which security and compliance solutions are available.
What has changed?
The Microsoft 365 E5 Security suite is now called the Microsoft Defender Suite, while the Microsoft 365 E5 Compliance suite has been renamed the Microsoft Purview Suite. Both suites offer an integrated approach to combating cyberthreats and managing internal data risks.
Microsoft Defender Suite
The Defender Suite protects your organization against various digital threats. With Entra ID P2, you gain risk-based access and visibility into risky logins, including privileged identity management. Defender for Identity detects advanced threats and malicious insider actions using Active Directory signals. MDO P2 protects your email and collaboration tools from phishing and other threats, while MDE P2 provides advanced endpoint security and access to threat experts. Defender for Cloud Apps automatically monitors your cloud apps and blocks unusual activity or risky apps.
Microsoft Purview Suite
The Purview Suite helps protect sensitive information and comply with regulations. Data is automatically discovered, classified, and secured with Information Protection and DLP. Insider Risk Management and adaptive security analyze internal risks and automatically adjust policies. The suite also protects Microsoft 365 Copilot data from accidental sharing and data leaks. With pre-built compliance templates, eDiscovery, and audit insights, you can easily comply with regulations and conduct investigations more quickly when necessary.
The name change makes it clear that the Defender Suite is intended for security, while the Purview Suite focuses on compliance.
