Microsoft has announced Copilot Cowork as a new feature within Microsoft 365. The promise: no longer just answering questions or drafting texts, but actually performing tasks and handling workflows on behalf of the user. In this article, we provide an independent description of what Copilot Cowork entails, what it can do, and what questions this raises for your organization.
From chatting to executing
Copilot has long been used for quickly retrieving information or drafting communications. The next step Microsoft is taking is converting that intention into concrete actions within Microsoft 365. That is the function Cowork fulfills.
Users describe the desired result, after which Cowork draws up a plan based on available data from emails, meetings, messages, files, and business systems. Cowork is built on Work IQ and draws on signals from Outlook, Teams, Excel, and the other Microsoft 365 applications to do so.
How We Work
When you transfer a task to Cowork, it converts your request into a plan that runs in the background. Control points are built in: you can view progress, make changes, or pause execution. Cowork asks for clarification when necessary and waits for approval before actions are implemented. The user retains control over what happens.
Microsoft lists four scenarios in which Cowork can be used:
1. Agenda management Cowork analyzes the Outlook calendar, identifies conflicts, and suggests adjustments. Upon approval, meetings are accepted, declined, or rescheduled, and focus time is scheduled.
2. Meeting preparation Based on email, meeting history, and files, Cowork compiles a set of documents: a briefing, supporting analysis, and a presentation. These are stored in Microsoft 365.
3. Company research Cowork collects relevant sources such as annual reports, SEC filings, and analyst commentary, organizes the findings with source references, and delivers a summary, research memo, and Excel workbook.
4. Launch preparation For a product launch, Cowork prepares a competitive analysis, a value proposition document, and a customer presentation, including an overview of milestones and next steps.
Edit with Copilot
In addition to CoWork, Microsoft is also introducing Edit with Copilot: an agentic workflow within Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook. With this, Copilot can directly suggest and implement edits in documents and emails, after user approval.
Security and governance
Cowork operates within the existing security and governance frameworks of Microsoft 365. Access rights, compliance policies, and audit capabilities apply by default. Tasks are performed in a secure cloud environment. Microsoft collaborated with Anthropic in the development of Cowork and integrated the technology behind Claude as part of a broader multi-model strategy in which Copilot is not tied to a single model vendor.

Copilot Cowork shifts the role of AI from supportive to executive.
